Religious Conversions: Supreme Court rejects Petition demanding ban on forced conversions

Today, the Supreme Court refused to consider a petition demanding steps to stop the conversion. The petition sought a direction to the Center to take steps to prevent fraudulent conversions in the country.

''Why should the court enter into this matter? How can the court issue a writ of mandamus to the government?'' the bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra made this observation while dismissing the petition.

Recently, Cases  of religious conversion are continuously coming to light in the country. However, it is not a crime to voluntarily leave one's own religion and adopt another religion, but if someone forcibly converts someone through fraud and greed, then it is categorized as a crime.

The lawyer appearing for petitioner Jerome Anto had argued before the bench that Hindus and minors are being continuously targeted and they are being converted 'fraudulently'. To this the bench replied, 'If there is a live challenge and someone has been prosecuted, then we can consider it.'

Rejecting the petition, the bench said, 'What kind of PIL is this? PIL has become a tool and everyone is coming up with such petitions. When the petitioner asked where should he go with such a complaint? On this the bench said, 'We do not have advisory jurisdiction and hence the petition is dismissed.'
