PNB scam: Mehul Choksi's wife approaches Mumbai court for cancellation of bailable warrant

Preeti Kothari, wife of Mehul Choksi, approaches Mumbai special court on Tuesday, requesting the revocation of the bailable warrant that has been issued against her in relation to the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, which involves over ₹13,000 crores.

Last year, ED mentioned Priti Choksi, also known as Priti Pradyotkumar Kothari, as an accused in the supplementary charge sheet. She was charged with helping her husband, the prime accused, "in layering of the proceeds of crime".

In her application, Preeti Kothari explained that the court had issued bailable warrants against her on August 9 because she failed to appear in person despite receiving summons.

Kothari stated that she was unaware of the ongoing legal proceedings because she had been residing in Antigua and Barbuda since 2018, which was well before the money laundering case was registered.

Kothari further pointed out that Indian authorities were well aware of her foreign citizenship and residence outside India.

The special court has instructed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to present its response and has scheduled the next hearing for August 25.

In addition to Choksi and Kothari, the ED's charge sheet also includes Choksi's three companies: Gitanjali Gems Ltd, Gili India Ltd, and Nakshatra Brand Ltd, as well as retired Punjab National Bank deputy manager Gokulnath Shetty from the Brady House branch in Mumbai.

This marks the third charge sheet against Choksi, with the first two being filed in 2018 and 2020 by the ED.

Choksi, along with his nephew Nirav Modi, their family members, employees, bank officials, and others, were implicated by both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2018 for their alleged involvement in the fraud at the PNB's Brady House branch in Mumbai.
