Law Ministry writes letter to CJI UU Lalit requesting him to recommend name of his successor

The Union Law Minister Kiran Rijuju has sent a letter to the present CJI Uday Umesh Lalit to send the name of his successor. The term of the office of incumbent Chief Justice Lalit is coming to an end on 08th November 2022. 

Justice DY Chandrachud is presently the senior most judge of the country and as per the seniority convention, Justice Lalit is expected to recommend his name for the post of the Chief Justice of India.

If the name of Justice Chandrachud is recommended by CJI Lalit, Justice Chandrachud will take over as the 50th Chief Justice of India and could take oath on 09th November 2022 and will serve upon the post till November 10, 2024, on his retirement. 

Father of Justice DY Chandrachud had also remained Chief Justice of India and on the assumption of office by Justice Chandrachud, history would be created that two generations of the same family have become the Chief justice of India.
