After a delay of two months, the central government approved the appointment of five judges on Saturday amid the continuing tussle between the judiciary and the government.
The Supreme Court of India has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges and is currently functioning with 27 judges. With these appointments, the strength of judges in the Supreme Court will increase to 32.
On December 13, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, recommended names of Justice Pankaj Mithal (Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court), Justice Sanjay Karol (Chief Justice of Patna High Court), Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (Chief Justice of Manipur High Court) Chief Justice of India), Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (Judge, Patna High Court) and Justice Manoj Mishra (Judge, Allahabad High Court) for elevation as judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Pankaj Mithal: Justice Pankaj Mithal (Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court)
Justice Pankaj Mithal did his graduation from Allahabad University in the year 1982 and LLB from Meerut College. Since 1985, he has practiced in the Allahabad High Court. In January 2021, he was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.
Justice Sanjay Karol: Justice Sanjay Karol (Chief Justice of Patna High Court)
Justice Sanjay Karol was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on November 11, 2019. Prior to this he had served as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice Karol has served as the Patron-in-Chief of the Tripura State Legal Services Authority as well as the President of the Tripura Judicial Academy. He was born on 23 August 1961 in Shimla.
Justice PV Sanjay Kumar: Justice PV Sanjay Kumar (Chief Justice of Manipur High Court)
Justice PV Sanjay Kumar was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court in 2021 and was earlier a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was born on August 14, 1963, to Late Shri P. Ramachandra Reddy, former Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh (1969 to 1982).
Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah: Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah (Judge, Patna High Court)
Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah was elevated as a judge of the Patna High Court on June 20, 2011, and then transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on October 10, 2021. He was then transferred to the Patna High Court on June 20 last year. He was born on 11th May, 1963 and enrolled with the Bihar State Bar Council on 27th September, 1991.
Justice Manoj Misra: Justice Manoj Mishra (Judge, Allahabad High Court)
Justice Manoj Mishra graduated in Law from Allahabad University in 1988 and enrolled as an advocate on 12 December 1988. After practicing on the civil, revenue, criminal and constitutional sides of the Allahabad High Court, he was promoted as Additional Judge on 21 November. , 2011. He was sworn in as a permanent judge on August 06, 2013.
