Jitendra Tyagi @ Vasim Rizvi to be released on bail: Supreme Court

Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice BV Nagaratha of the Supreme Court granted bail to Jitendra Narayan Tyag @ Waseem Rizvi in the case of alleged hate speeches made at the Dharam Sansad organized in Haridwar between 17th to 19th December, 2021. The Apex Court granted bail to the Godman with certain conditions which include that he should not address electronic media.

Jitendra Tyagi was arrested by the police on 13 January, 2022 for the alleged offenses committed u/s 153A and 298 IPC. Jitendra Tyagi who was earlier known as Wasim Rizvi was once upon a time Chairman of UP Shia Waqf Board and later converted to Hinduism and accepted a new name Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi.

Tyagi used derogatory words during his speech in Dharam Sansad about the prophet who intended to wound the religious feelings of persons belonging to a particular community. it intended to wage war. It promotes enmity. It is hate speech.

Parity was also a ground for the grant of bail to the Tyagi which noted the fact that the co-accused has also been granted bail in the case.

On a previous occasion, Tyagi had approached the Supreme Court for an extension of interim bail granted to him on 17th May 2022 but the Court refused to extend it and directed him to surrender. In furtherance of the same, Tyagi surrendered.

Supreme Court also issued notice on a writ petition filed by Tyagi for clubbing of various FIRs lodged against him.

This petition is pending before the Supreme Court since May, 2022.
