Jammu Court Sentences Man to Community Service at Cow Shelter

A local court in Bhaderwah, Jammu and Kashmir, recently sentenced a man found guilty of causing public nuisance under the influence of alcohol to three days of community service at a cow shelter.

The order was passed by Sub-Judge Madhu Sharma of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Bhaderwah, on March 19.

"The accused is convicted and sentenced to undergo community service by cleaning at Shri Gomata Seva Samiti Dhamunder Bhaderwah for three days, from March 24 to March 26, for three hours daily, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The convict shall complete his sentence under the supervision of SHO P/S Bhaderwah," the court directed.

The supervising police officer has been instructed to submit a compliance report, including photographs of the convict performing the community service, by April 3.

The case involved Bikram Singh, who was found intoxicated and causing public disturbance near Nalthi Naka, Bhaderwah, during a police patrol on March 18. He was booked under Section 355 (misconduct in public by a drunken person) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

During trial, Singh pleaded guilty. "The accused’s plea has been recorded in open court, read over to him, and admitted as true. In my opinion, the confession is voluntary and made without coercion or undue influence," the court noted.

Following his admission, the court convicted Singh and directed him to perform community service at a cow shelter as punishment.

Advocate Mohd. Majid Malik represented Singh in the case.
