ICJ's Judge Hilary Charlesworth joins SC bench with CJI Chandrachud!

In a notable development, Hilary Charlesworth, an Australian international lawyer and current judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), was present on the Supreme Court bench in India. The distinguished jurist sat alongside Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday, actively participating in judicial proceedings.

Justice Hilary Charlesworth assumed her role as a judge on the International Court of Justice on November 5, 2021. Her recent presence in India included delivering the second annual lecture at the Supreme Court premises on 'The International Court of Justice: A legal forum in a political environment.' This lecture provided valuable insights into the workings of the ICJ, shedding light on its role as a legal forum amidst a dynamic political landscape.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed his honor in welcoming Justice Charlesworth during the Foundation Day lecture in Delhi, stating, "It is indeed an honour for me to join Justice Surya Kant in welcoming Justice Hilary Charlesworth, Judge of the International Court of Justice and an old friend." He further acknowledged her as a friend of India and highlighted her distinguished career.

During the same event, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta extended a warm welcome to Justice Charlesworth, recognizing her contributions to the legal field. He stated, "We all welcome her Ladyship to the court," emphasizing the significance of her presence on the Supreme Court bench.

The connection between Justice Charlesworth and India goes beyond her role as an ICJ judge. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud mentioned that she had previously taught at Mayo College, further strengthening her ties with the country.
