Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh finds himself entangled in legal proceedings as he seeks bail in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case. In the latest hearing on Monday the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, has sought a response from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Singh's plea.
Sanjay Singh's arrest by the ED on October 4, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case linked to the controversial Delhi Excise Policy, has sparked considerable legal proceedings. The policy, now scrapped, allegedly favored specific liquor manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. Singh, a prominent figure within the AAP and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, has been embroiled in legal battles since his arrest.
Having faced setbacks in lower courts, Singh has turned to the highest judicial authority in the country, the Supreme Court, in his quest for bail. The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed his bail application on February 9, following a similar decision by a trial court on December 22.
The Supreme Court has slated March 5 as the date for considering Singh's bail plea, which will also coincide with his petition challenging the circumstances surrounding his arrest and subsequent remand. These legal maneuvers mark a pivotal moment in Singh's legal battle, as he strives to secure his release and contest the allegations leveled against him.
Singh's legal saga has not been isolated, as it forms part of a broader series of arrests within the AAP leadership concerning the excise policy scandal. Vijay Nair, AAP's communications in-charge, was arrested in November 2022, while former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, faced arrest in February 2023, both in connection with the same case.
The Delhi High Court's previous dismissal of Singh's petition challenging his arrest had underscored concerns regarding the potential implications of attributing political motivations to the actions of the ED. Such observations reflect the complex interplay between legal proceedings and the broader political landscape, wherein the reputation and image of individuals and institutions are at stake.
