Centre appointments Advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as Additional judge of Bombay High Court

Today, the Central government appoints advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as and Additional judge of the Bombay High Court.

Th Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Meghwal made this announcement through his Twitter handle.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had recommended her appointment as a judge of the Bombay High Court, after noting that Deshpande is a competent lawyer well versed in several branches of law, particularly in constitutional and service matters.

In May 2023, the Collegium deferred its decision on the recommendation and decided to seek a report of the then ACJ of the Bombay High Court in view of the issues the Department of Justice flagged.

The then ACJ of the High Court, after discussing the matter with his colleagues at the Aurangabad Bench, submitted the report on May 10, 2022.

According to the resolution, the Collegium considered the government's inputs in conjunction with the report of the then ACJ.

Three consultee judges of the Supreme Court, who had previously served at the High Court, were of the opinion that Deshpande was suitable for elevation. The resolution further stated that the High Court Collegium was well positioned to ascertain the lawyer's professional competence.

As of June 1, 2023, the Bombay High Court is operating with 63 judges against a sanctioned strength of 94, leaving a vacancy position of 31
