Anubrata Mandal, the Trinamool Congress's Birbhum District President, who is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail, Delhi, on charges related to cattle smuggling, faced a setback when his bail petition was declined by the Calcutta High Court. In response to this decision, Anubrata Mandal has taken his case to the Supreme Court, which has now issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with his bail plea.
A division bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Bela M Trivedi has issued notice to the CBI. On Monday, Anubrata's lawyer Mukul Rohatgi questioned the Supreme Court and said that five charge sheets have been filed. My client is alone in jail. He has spent 14 months in jail. Even the main 'kingpin' has got bail in this case. Therefore Anubrata should also be granted bail.
Justice Basu said that the court is directing the CBI to issue a notice. The judge also said that it should be known at what stage the investigation is. He told that after this the bail application will be considered. Anubrata was arrested by CBI in August last year in the cattle smuggling case. After this he was shifted to Asansol jail.
He was later taken into custody by the ED in the same case, but the Trinamool leader was arrested by the state police in an attempt to murder case. After getting bail, he was again taken from Rampurhat jail to Asansol jail.
Mandal was kept in its custody by the ED in Delhi for two weeks for questioning in the cow smuggling case, after which he is in Tihar. His daughter Sukanya Mandal and accountant Manish Kothari are also in Tihar jail. Meanwhile, the special court of Asanosal has transferred the case related to cattle smuggling to Delhi Court on the application of ED.
