The Calcutta High Court issued a directive on Friday, providing relief to TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. The court instructed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to refrain from taking coercive actions against him as part of their investigation into the West Bengal school jobs scandal.
Nevertheless, the court did not invalidate the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is akin to a First Information Report (FIR), that had been lodged by the Enforcement Directorate against Banerjee.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh instructed the Enforcement Directorate that they are not permitted to take any coercive measures against the Trinamool Congress MP in connection with the ECIR.
The court upheld that the evidence presented by the ED was insufficient to justify the arrest of Banerjee. The court also stated that the investigation into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers in government and government-sponsored schools involving Banerjee will proceed.
