BRS leader K Kavitha granted interim protection in Delhi liquor scam case

K Kavitha, a prominent leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, has been granted interim protection from arrest in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor scam case. The protection has been provided by the Supreme Court until March 13, 2024, when the matter is scheduled for the next hearing.

Kavitha approached the Supreme Court after receiving summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The summons required her appearance before the ED on February 26, a date she did not comply with.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, granted her protection and will revisit the case on March 13, 2024.

In her petition to the Supreme Court, Kavitha argued that she should be interrogated at her home, emphasizing the right to privacy for women and asserting that she cannot be compelled to visit the ED office.

The roots of the money laundering case lie in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR. According to both the CBI and the ED, irregularities took place during the modification of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, which has since been scrapped.

The allegations include the extension of undue favors to license holders. The Delhi government initially implemented the excise policy on November 17, 2021, only to withdraw it at the end of September 2022 amidst corruption allegations.
