'We cannot stop any government from making policy', SC on Bihar Caste Based Survey

Today,  the Supreme Court, while hearing the petition related to the caste census conducted by the Bihar government, said that we cannot stop any state government from making policy or working. Can only review it. Now the next hearing in this case will be in January 2024.

While hearing the petition related to Bihar caste census, the Supreme Court clearly refused to ban the publication of the data of caste census conducted by the Bihar government.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti refused to restrain the government from acting on the data published so far as part of the survey or to interfere with any move to publish more results.

Along with this, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Nitish-Tejashwi government on the petitions challenging the order of Patna High Court dated August 1, 2023.

Bihar government made the caste census report public on 2 October. According to the report, the population of Bihar is 13 crore, seven lakh 25 thousand three hundred and ten. If we look at the total population class-wise, the population of backward class is 27.12 percent, extremely backward class is 36.01 percent, scheduled caste is 19.65 percent, scheduled tribe is 1.68 percent and general class is 15.52 percent.

According to the Bihar caste census report, 215 castes living in the state and people following a total of six religions were counted in the census. Among these, the number of Hindus is 10 crore, 71 lakh 92 thousand 958 (81.99%). Whereas Muslim population is 2 crore 31 lakh 49 thousand 925 (17.70%).

The population of Buddhist religion is 1 lakh 11 thousand 201 i.e. (.08%), Christian is 75 thousand 238 (.05%), Sikh is 14 thousand 753 (.01%) and Jain is 12 thousand 523 (.0096%).
