UP Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Raping His 60-Year-Old Widow Mother

Recently, a Uttar Pradesh has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping his 60-year-old mother in a farm.

Additional District Judge-II, Varun Mohit Nigam, described the case as "rarest of the rare" and a reflection of societal decay.

The victim, who had been living with her two sons since her husband's passing a decade ago, went to the farm on January 16, 2023, with her elder son. During this visit, she was assaulted and threatened with death should she disclose the incident.

Six days later, her younger son filed a complaint, which resulted in the accused's arrest. The FIR included charges against the accused under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Although the doctor’s examination found no evidence of sexual intercourse, the court based its decision on the mother’s testimony, asserting that her uncorroborated statement constituted adequate evidence. Consequently, the court imposed a fine of ₹51,000 on the convicted individual.

According to a report by the Times of India, Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Vijay Sharma stated that the accused demanded a physical relationship with his mother and threatened to kill her if she revealed the incident. The woman testified that the crime committed by her own son would torment her for the rest of her life.
