Today, the Supreme Court initiated suo motu proceedings regarding video clips that feature controversial remarks made by a judge of the Karnataka High Court during hearings.
A five-judge bench, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hrishikesh Roy, convened this morning and issued an order requesting a report from the Karnataka High Court.
Recently, two video clips featuring Justice V Srishananda of the High Court circulated on social media, where he made objectionable remarks. In one clip, he referred to an area in Bangalore as "Pakistan," while in another, he was seen making inappropriate comments toward a woman advocate.
"Attorney General we may lay down some basic guidelines and seek a report from the secretary general of the HC," CJI told AG R Venkataramani.
The Court instructed the Registrar General of the High Court to submit a report to the Supreme Court after obtaining administrative directions from the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The case will be reviewed again on Monday.
