Today, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition calling for re-elections in 20 assembly constituencies in Haryana.
"What kind of petitions are these?", Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed surprise at the matter before dismissing it.
When the petitioner mentioned the case for urgent listing this morning, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) raised concerns about the reliefs sought. "You want to prevent an elected government from taking the oath? We are cautioning you... we will dismiss the case with costs," the CJI warned the petitioner's counsel. Despite this, the counsel pressed to argue the matter, prompting the CJI to schedule the hearing for the same day and instruct him to circulate the necessary papers.
Later in the day, the bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra heard the matter after concluding the marital rape case, just before the bench was set to adjourn at 4 PM.
The petitioner's counsel argued for re-elections in 20 Vidhan Sabha constituencies, citing inaccuracies in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He further stated that the Congress party had already submitted a representation to the Election Commission, raising these concerns.
"Taken on board and dismissed," CJI ordered after disapproving of the nature of the reliefs in the petition.
In the recently concluded Haryana assembly elections, with results declared on October 8, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious. BJP leader Naib Singh Saini is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Haryana today.
