Supreme Court agrees to hear writ petition filed against appointment of Advocate L Victoria Gowri as a judge of Madras High Court

A writ petition has been filed in Supreme Court protesting the appointment of Advocate L Victoria Gowri as a Madras High Court judge.

Raju Ramachandran, a senior advocate, brought the case before Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for an urgent listing.

However, just before the case was brought up, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted that the Center had nominated 13 more judges, including Victoria Gowri, to the High Courts.

After information about Advocate Victoria Gowri's BJP affiliation and some remarks she made about Muslims and Christians arose in the public eye, the proposal involving the Deputy Solicitor General who represents the Central Government at the Madurai Bench became contentious. A portion of the Madras High Court bar has written to the Chief Justice of India asking him to order the collegium to withdraw the suggestion for her elevation that it made on January 17.
