Supreme Court agreed to hear a petition challenging the Union Government's recent notification authorising the sale of a new tranche of electoral bonds

On Monday, 14 November 2022, The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to hear a petition challenging the Union Government's recent notification authorising the sale of a new tranche of electoral bonds for the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

The petition was referred to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for urgent consideration. The counsel requested an urgent listing, claiming that the sale of Electoral Bonds would be completed soon.

It should be noted that a number of petitions are pending in the Supreme Court challenging the provisions of the Finance Act 2017 that allowed for anonymous electoral bonds. On October 14, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and BV Nagarathna adjourned those petitions until December 6.

The Supreme Court denied an application to stay the sale of electoral bonds ahead of state assembly elections in March 2021.
