Singapore SC Judge Judith Prakash joins Constitution Bench in Mineral Rights Tax case

Justice Judith Prakash of the Singapore Supreme Court was welcomed as a guest member to the Constitution bench in the Supreme Court of India today. This bench is currently examining whether the royalty collected by the Centre on mineral rights can be categorized as tax, as established by a seven-judge bench in 1989.

Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the nine-judge bench, announced Justice Prakash's participation, highlighting her presence as a notable addition to the bench.

Justice Prakash's visit coincided with the Delhi Arbitration Weekend, where she is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. Chief Justice Chandrachud warmly welcomed her, citing the recent presence of Singapore Supreme Court Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon in a similar capacity.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta extended his greetings to Justice Prakash, recognizing her esteemed presence in the legal fraternity. Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing in court for the royalty matter, conveyed his warm regards on behalf of the bar, expressing his eagerness to engage with Justice Prakash, albeit on the subject of Indian constitutional law.

Meanwhile, the second edition of the Delhi Arbitration Weekend is set to unfold from March 6 to 10, organized by the Delhi International Arbitration Centre. This event serves as a platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration in the field of arbitration, attracting legal luminaries from around the world.
