SC Upholds Anticipatory Bail for Bhavani Revanna in Kidnapping Case

The Supreme Court declined to overturn the anticipatory bail awarded to Bhavani Revanna, mother of suspended JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, in a kidnapping case related to one of the alleged victims of her son's accused sexual assaults.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued a notice to Revanna regarding an appeal filed by the Karnataka government challenging a Karnataka High Court order.

"The accused is a woman who is aged 55 years. There are serious allegations against her son of indulging in atrocious things. He ran away and eventually, he was caught.

"In a case of this kind of allegations, what will be the role of the mother in abetting the crime committed by her son?" the bench told senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government.

Mr. Sibal expressed dismay, calling the granted relief "most unfortunate," noting that the victim remained in captivity at the family's behest.

"There is nothing... let us not politicise the matter," the bench observed.

On June 18, the High Court granted anticipatory bail to Bhavani Revanna, highlighting that she had already responded to 85 questions during the investigation. The court emphasized that this cooperation with the SIT probing the sexual abuse allegations against her son made it unfair to suggest she was not cooperating.
