The Supreme Court took action on Monday by issuing notice in the plea filed by former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. He challenged his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case
A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta listed the matter for hearing next week. Additionally, the Bench made observations regarding the case.
"It is open for the High Court to pronounce judgment in the reserved case till then."
In his plea before the apex court, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader underscored the delay by the Jharkhand High Court in delivering its order on his petition challenging his arrest.
Earlier, he approached the Supreme Court under Article 32 to challenge his arrest. However, the apex court declined to entertain his plea and directed him to first seek relief from the Jharkhand High Court.
Soren resigned from his position as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on January 31 following his arrest by the ED in a money laundering case linked to the "illegal change of ownership of land by the mafia" in the State.
On June 23, 2016, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) lodged a prosecution complaint in connection with the case under Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The complaint named Soren, Ranjan, nine others, and three companies as defendants.
In a video released shortly before his arrest, he asserted that he was being detained based on "fake papers" as part of a conspiracy against him. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand High Court has not yet delivered its verdict on his petition.
