SC Seeks Responses from Centre and Governors of West Bengal and Kerala on State Bills' Denial of Assent

On Friday, the Supreme Court requested responses from the Centre as well as the secretaries to the governors of West Bengal and Kerala regarding separate petitions from the two state governments. These petitions challenge the refusal to assent to bills and the subsequent referral of these bills to the President for consideration.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Paridwala, and Justice Manoj Misra issued notices to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the secretaries to the governors of both West Bengal and Kerala.

Senior advocate KK Venugopal, representing Kerala, stated that the challenge was directed at the governor's decision to refer the bills to the President for consideration.

Similarly, senior advocates Abhishek Singhvi and Jaideep Gupta, representing West Bengal, noted that each time the matter was listed in the Supreme Court, the governor's office had referred the bills to the President.
