SC Rejects PIL Seeking Summer Exemption from Black Coats for Lawyers

The Supreme Court has dismissed a PIL requesting an exemption for lawyers from wearing black coats and gowns in court during the summer months.

The court highlighted the need to uphold decorum and recommended that any proposals for changes be directed to the Bar Council of India and state bar councils.

The bench consist of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, advised the petitioner, Shailendra Mani Tripathi, to submit a representation to the Bar Council of India and state bar councils.

This approach would enable these bodies to consider the matter and make a decision, taking into account the diverse climatic conditions across regions.

During the course of hearing, the bench emphasized that proper dress code is essential and that arguing cases in informal clothing such as 'kurta-pyjama' or shorts and T-shirts is not acceptable. While the petition was not entertained, the petitioner was allowed to withdraw it.
