SC Rejects PIL on New Delhi Railway Station Stampede

The Supreme Court rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, which resulted in multiple fatalities.

The PIL, filed by Anand Legal Trust, alleged that several deaths had not been accounted for and that many affected families were yet to receive compensation. A bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice PK Mishra declined to entertain the plea, directing the petitioner to seek relief from the High Court.

"Incidents of stampede have become recurrent...Railways has issued notices to people to remove videos that are being uploaded...200 people have died," the petitioner submitted.

The bench said that it was open for the affected persons to approach the Court. "If any person has died and their family member has not received ex-gratia, they can approach and say that my name is not there...any such incident you have come across? So that we can appreciate what you are saying...that 200 died but only 50 have been accounted for.." Justice Mishra observed.

The petitioner argued that video evidence and eyewitness accounts indicated a higher death toll than officially reported. However, the bench declined to entertain the matter.

Meanwhile, last week, the Delhi High Court sought responses from the Union Government and the Railways on a plea urging measures to prevent stampedes at railway stations.
