In a move to address the judicial vacancies at the Allahabad High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of eight judicial officers to the Bench. The decision was taken during a Collegium meeting held on April 2.
The officers proposed for elevation are:
Jitendra Kumar Sinha
Abdul Shahid
Anil Kumar-X
Tej Pratap Tiwari
Sandeep Jain
Avnish Saxena
Madan Pal Singh
Harvir Singh
The recommendations come amid ongoing concerns about the high number of vacancies in the Allahabad High Court, where more than half of the sanctioned posts remain unfilled. The court currently functions with 79 judges against a sanctioned strength of 160.
A related petition is pending before the High Court, urging time-bound and urgent appointments to fill these longstanding vacancies.
In a recent development, the Central government approved the transfer of three judges — Justices Yashwant Varma, Chandra Dhari Singh, and Arindam Sinha — to the Allahabad High Court. However, the Supreme Court has directed the Chief Justice of the High Court not to assign judicial work to Justice Varma for now.
This directive follows the launch of an inquiry last month after a substantial amount of unaccounted cash was discovered at Justice Varma’s Delhi residence. The incident came to light when firefighters responded to a blaze at the premises
