SC Expresses Concern Over Delays in Verification of Advocates' Law Degrees and Enrolment by Bar Councils

Recently, the Supreme Court raised significant concerns regarding the delays in the verification of law degrees and enrollment of advocates by the Bar Councils.

A bench consisting of CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justices Sanjay Kumar, and KV Viswanathan was hearing a transfer petition filed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). While discussing the long-pending degree verification process, the CJI remarked:

"It is a very serious thing. The verification drive must be expedited. There has to be a timeline for this"

Senior Advocate R. Balasubramanian, representing the Bar Council of India (BCI), informed the bench that the verification process is being conducted on a state-wise basis, which is contributing to the delays.

In light of this, the bench instructed the BCI to submit an updated status report within eight weeks.

It is worth noting that in April 2023, a bench comprising then-CJI Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala had ordered the formation of a High-Powered Committee to oversee the verification of advocates' degree certificates.
