Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, a celebrated Mohiniyattam artist, has taken her case to the High Court after her anticipatory bail request was denied by a Special Court. This denial pertains to allegations under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (SC/ST Act).
The dancer stands accused of allegedly making caste-based remarks directed at RLV Ramakrishnan, a fellow artist who is from a scheduled caste community.
Justice PV Kunhikrishnan issued an order on Tuesday for notice to be served to Ramakrishnan, informing him that the appeal will be heard on Thursday.
This follows remarks allegedly made by the dancer in an interview given to a YouTube channel. In the interview, which gained widespread attention online, Sathyabhama purportedly made derogatory comments about Ramakrishnan's appearance and the color of his skin.
After the interview, Ramakrishnan lodged a police complaint against Sathyabhama, accusing her of committing offenses punishable under the SC/ST Act.
Initially, she sought anticipatory bail from the special court. However, the court determined that the alleged offenses were prima facie established and subsequently denied her application on April 22.
In response to the special court's decision, she took her case to the High Court with the current appeal. Her argument revolves around her assertion of being unaware of Ramakrishnan's caste and her denial of committing any of the offenses attributed to her.
Advocates BA Aloor, KP Prasanth, Haseeb Hassan M, Krishnasankar D, Asokan KV and Rebin Vincent Gralan appeared Sathyabhama.
