Punjab & Haryana HC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Man's Suicide with Snatched Firearm at Golden Temple

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a tragic incident where a man fatally shot himself with a firearm he snatched from a personal security officer (PSO) accompanying a sitting judge at Amritsar's Golden Temple. 

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal termed the incident a security lapse and has summoned the Director General of Police, Punjab, to appear via video conference on Wednesday. 

The Court acted based on media reports from September 22, including a Hindustan Times article, which stated that the firearm used by the deceased belonged to an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) escorting the judge, who was visiting the temple to pay respects.

As reported by the Hindustan Times, the firearm used by the man to fatally shoot himself belonged to an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) who was part of the security detail accompanying a judge visiting the Golden Temple to pay respects.

The bullets pierced into his head and he died on the spot. The police took the body to a hospital,” police officer told the daily.

Additional Advocate General Saurav Khurana represented the State of Punjab and was asked to seek instructions in the matter.
