Punjab & Haryana HC Issues Notice to Punjab Govt on Habeas Plea for Jagjit Singh Dallewal

The Punjab & Haryana High Court, in a late evening order, issued a notice to the Punjab Government on a habeas corpus petition filed regarding the alleged illegal detention of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal from the ongoing farmers' protest.

While issuing notice to the Punjab Government and Director General of Police, Justice Manisha Batra stated in the order that, "This petition has been received at 6:45 pm making prayer for issuance of a writ in the nature of habeas corpus for release of detenue Jagit Singh Dallewal who is the farmer leader of Joint Forum Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) who is in illegal custody of the respondents."

The petition filed by farmer leader Gurmukh Singh stated that on March 19, 2025, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for over 100 days, participated in the seventh round of talks with a central delegation led by the Union Agriculture Minister, along with other farmer leaders.

While returning from the meeting to the protest sites at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, Dallewal's convoy was intercepted by the Punjab Police near the Jagatpura area in Mohali.

The petition further stated that Dallewal, along with other leaders, was detained without prior notice or explanation, triggering clashes between farmers and the police.

"300 to 400 others members of farmer organization were also missing," the plea stated.

The petitioner has sought a directive for the production of the detainee in court and requested any other relief the court deems appropriate.

The matter is scheduled for further consideration on March 24.

The plea was filed by advocates Gurmohan Preet Singh, Angrej Singh, and Kanwarjit Singh.
