No Public Disturbance During Court Appearance of YouTuber 'Savukku' Shankar, Madurai Police Report to HC

The Greater Chennai and Madurai city police informed the Madras High Court that there was no public disturbance or law and order issue when YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar, also known as A. Shankar, appeared before different courts in May regarding multiple cases against him.

In separate status reports filed before the first Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice R. Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq, the Inspectors of Egmore police station in Chennai and Anna Nagar police station in Madurai stated that random protesters outside the courts were peacefully dispersed.

These reports were in response to a public interest litigation petition by advocate M.L. Ravi, who sought an inquiry by a retired High Court judge into the mobilization of women protesters who threw broomsticks at the YouTuber. Egmore Inspector N. Thirumal reported that on May 23, he received a memo from the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate to take precautionary measures during Shankar’s appearance at the Egmore Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court. Consequently, a substantial police presence, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, three Inspectors, eight Sub Inspectors, and 21 other personnel, ensured no law and order issues occurred inside the court campus, and the accused was transported safely.

Similarly, S. Sri Thamarai Vishnu, Inspector of Anna Nagar police station in Madurai, reported that some women protesters unexpectedly gathered outside the Madurai district court and raised slogans against Shankar for his derogatory comments about women police personnel in a YouTube interview. The Assistant Commissioner of Police for Anna Nagar Range quickly mobilized additional police to disperse the protesters peacefully, ensuring no public disturbance occurred.

Following the submission of the status reports, the Division Bench adjourned the hearing on the PIL petition to July 15.
