Kerala HC Petition Seeks Regulation of Non-Hindu Entry in Cochin Devaswom Board Temple

A recent petition filed in the Kerala High Court seeks regulation on the entry of non-Hindus into temples managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB). The Division Bench has granted the CDB two weeks to submit a counter-affidavit in response.

The petitioners, devotees of Lord Poornathrayeesa, have expressed concerns over the use of temple grounds at Tripunithura for film shoots, particularly the Malayalam movie *Vishesham*, which involved scenes shot on temple property with alleged non-Hindu crew members entering the premises. They also highlighted similar incidents in other temples, such as Guruvayur, where filming has occurred despite restrictions.

The petitioners argue that such activities compromise the sanctity and decorum of these sacred spaces and may offend worshippers. They contend that allowing commercial filming, especially of non-religious themes, infringes upon the Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship (Authorization of Entry) Rules, 1965. Additionally, the petition raises concerns over alleged instances of individuals under the influence of alcohol being allowed to enter temple premises, attributing this lapse to the CDB.

The petitioners are requesting court orders to restrict non-Hindu access to temples, prohibit film productions on temple grounds, and prevent intoxicated individuals from entering. During a previous hearing, CDB’s standing counsel indicated that the board had already initiated measures to regulate activities as per Rule 8 of the relevant regulations and would provide a detailed counter-affidavit by November 25, the date of the next hearing.
