After the creation of the High Court of Meghalaya in March 2013, the Bar Council of Meghalaya was also created. However, for the past few years, the Bar Council of Meghalaya was non-functional due to issues with the transfer of Licences from the erstwhile Bar council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
With the framing of the rules by the High Court of Meghalaya in late 2021, the first election for the Bar Council of Meghalaya was held today at various parts of Meghalaya under an ad-hoc committee comprising of the Registrar General High Court of Meghalaya, Shri. A. Kharumnuid, the Advocate General, Meghalaya, Shri. Amit Kumar and Shri. H.L Shangreiso Sr. Adv.
The fate of 39 candidates has been locked in the ballot box by an electorate of around 800 advocates. As per the latest reports, there has been more than 80% voting, with Tura recording a 99% turnout.
The counting of the votes is set for 30th September 2022.
