Firecrackers Ban: Supreme Court refuses to interfere in the ban on firecrackers in Delhi

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to interfere with the Delhi government's order imposing a blanket ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers in the capital.

BJP Lok Sabha MP Manoj Tiwari told a bench of Justice AS Bopanna and Justice MM Sundaresh that despite the court allowing bursting of green crackers, a complete ban on firecrackers has been imposed.

"No, we are not going to interfere. Where the government has banned firecrackers, it means a complete ban. Health of the people is important. If you want to burst firecrackers, go to those states," the bench told the lawyer.

The lawyer said that being an MP, his client is responsible towards his voters and the court itself has given permission to burst green crackers.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari criticized the complete ban on firecrackers in Delhi, saying this was done despite the court's approval for green firecrackers.

The bench told North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari, "You should explain to the people that they should not burst crackers. Even during the victory procession after the elections, you should not burst crackers. More ways to celebrate victory."

To deal with high pollution levels, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a blanket ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and bursting of firecrackers in the national capital. The comprehensive directive which includes a ban on online sale of firecrackers comes ahead of the festive season. A similar complete ban was imposed during the last two years.
