DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin rebuked for comments on 'Sanatana Dharma'

Udhayanidhi Stalin, a prominent leader of the DMK party and a Minister in Tamil Nadu, found himself on the receiving end of a stern rebuke from the Supreme Court today over alleged remarks concerning 'Sanatana Dharma'. As his plea seeking the consolidation of FIRs against him related to these comments was being heard, a strong message was delivered by the court, emphasizing that he had "abused his rights."

The bench comprising of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, advised Stalin that being a minister, he should be aware of the implications of his statement. The bench highlighted the gravity of the situation, reminding Stalin that he holds a significant position as a Minister and should be mindful of his statements.

"You misuse your privilege granted under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution and abuse your rights under Article 25. And now, you are invoking your entitlement under Article 32 to file a plea in the Supreme Court? Are you not aware of the repercussions of your statements? You are not an ordinary person; you hold a ministerial position. It is expected that you understand the implications," stated the bench before adjourning the case to March 15.

The court's admonishment underscores the responsibility that public figures, especially those in positions of power, bear regarding their public statements. The court emphasized that Udhayanidhi Stalin, as a Minister, should exercise caution and be aware of the impact his words can have on public sentiment.

Central to the issue are Udhayanidhi Stalin's alleged remarks on 'Sanatana Dharma.' The court did not delve into the specifics of the comments but made it clear that the nature of his statements warranted serious consideration.

In response to Udhayanidhi Stalin's plea to consolidate multiple FIRs filed against him, the Supreme Court suggested that he pursue his case in the High Court instead. This recommendation implies that the matter could be better addressed at the state level, emphasizing the importance of engaging with the legal processes available.
