In a significant move aimed at benefiting students from the economically weaker section (EWS), Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved a decision to raise the annual income threshold for EWS eligibility from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
This means that students whose parents have an annual income of Rs 5 lakh will now be eligible for admission under the EWS category.
The decision was announced through a notification issued by Raj Niwas on Monday. It follows a ruling by the Delhi High Court on December 5, 2023, which directed the Delhi government to increase the threshold limit from the previous Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
According to PTI, the notification stated that while the Delhi government, through the Chief Minister, had proposed increasing the limit to Rs 2.5 lakh by the end of October, the Lieutenant Governor had advised revisiting the threshold and raising it to at least Rs 5 lakh.
Subsequently, on November 13, the High Court noted that its previous orders had not been followed.
As a result, the Delhi government was compelled to revise the income limit once again, raising it to Rs 5 lakh and submitting it to the LG for approval, which was granted on Monday.
In accordance with the policy, private schools are mandated to reserve 25% of their seats for students from the EWS, Disadvantaged Groups (DG), and children with disabilities. Separate admission lists will be issued for these categories as per the guidelines.
