Delhi Court Takes Cognisance of Charge Sheet Against NewsClick Founder Prabir Purkayastha Under UAPA

On Tuesday, a Delhi court took cognizance of a charge sheet filed against Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of NewsClick, under the anti-terror law UAPA. The case revolves around accusations that the news portal received funds to propagate pro-China content.

Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur deemed that there was substantial evidence against the accused in the case. Consequently, she instructed the prosecution to provide Prabir Purkayastha with a copy of the charge sheet.

The judge scheduled May 31 for arguments regarding the framing of charges in the matter. Earlier in January, the court granted permission for NewsClick HR Head Amit Chakravarty to become an approver in the case.

The judge had granted pardon to Chakravarty, who was arrested in the case, upon his application. Chakravarty claimed to possess significant information that he was willing to disclose to the Delhi police, who are investigating the matter.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police had arrested Chakravarty and Purkayastha on October 3 last year. They are currently in judicial custody.

According to the FIR, a large amount of funds to the news portal allegedly came from China to "disrupt the sovereignty of India" and cause disaffection against the country.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police detained Chakravarty and Purkayastha on October 3 of the previous year, and they remain in judicial custody at present. As per the FIR, a substantial sum of money purportedly originating from China was directed towards the news portal with the alleged intent to "undermine the sovereignty of India" and foster disaffection against the nation.

On October 3, raids were conducted at 88 locations in Delhi and seven in other states by the police against the suspects mentioned in the FIR and those identified through data analysis.

Approximately 300 electronic devices were seized from NewsClick's offices and the residences of the journalists who were under investigation.

Subsequent to the raids, the Special Cell interrogated 46 individuals, including nine female journalists.
