Delhi Court Permits Son of YSR Congress Party MP to Turn Approver in Corruption Case

A Delhi court has granted permission to Raghav Magunta, the son of YSR Congress Party Lok Sabha MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, to become an approver in a corruption case connected to the purported Delhi excise policy scam.

Special court judge M K Nagpal, who had previously permitted Raghav Magunta to become an approver in the money laundering case investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2023, issued the order on February 29 granting his application to also serve as an approver in the corruption case under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In response to the application, the CBI informed the judge that the accused had cooperated with the investigation and had appeared for questioning whenever summoned.

The judge observed that Magunta had disclosed certain crucial facts in his recorded statements. Nagpal recently granted anticipatory bail to Magunta in the case, pointing out that he had not been directly named as an accused in the FIR, nor had any entity associated with him or his family members been implicated.

The CBI had not opposed his bail application.

"During the course of the investigation, which is even relevant for the ongoing further investigation, it is further stated in the above reply that no instance of influencing any witness in this case by the applicant has also been found. Hence, the CBI has not opposed the request made by the applicant for the grant of anticipatory bail to him," the court had said.

Magunta, who was granted approver status in the money laundering case, was also pardoned by the court. Both federal probe agencies have accused the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 of facilitating cartelization and showing favoritism towards specific dealers who allegedly paid bribes for licenses. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has vehemently denied these allegations. Following a recommendation from Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, the excise policy was revoked, prompting a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption.\
