Delhi Court Delays Framing Charges Against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Amid Call for Further Investigation

A Delhi Court postponed its decision on whether to proceed with charges against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and former President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. This delay came after Singh requested additional investigation into the case.

Today, Singh invoked the defence of alibi, informing the court that he was not present in Delhi at the time when one of the wrestlers, who filed a complaint against him, purportedly experienced sexual harassment.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot has reserved the order on Singh's application regarding his alibi defence. The court announced that the decision on his application will be delivered on April 26. The prosecution opposed Singh's application, labeling it as a delaying tactic and contending that it effectively requested additional investigation.

Significantly, the Court was anticipated to make a decision today regarding the framing of charges against Singh, who faces accusations of sexual harassment, stalking, outraging of modesty, and criminal intimidation by some women wrestlers.

Six wrestlers had accused Singh of sexual harassment, leading the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) based on their complaints. Subsequently, on June 15, 2023, the police filed a chargesheet against Singh, charging him with offences under Sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexually coloured remarks), 354D (stalking), and 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The complainants had previously approached the Supreme Court to request the registration of an FIR against Singh. Following this, the Delhi Police informed the Supreme Court that an FIR had been registered and that the investigation was proceeding as per protocol.

Additionally, a minor wrestler had accused Singh of misconduct. However, she later withdrew her complaint, prompting the Delhi Police to file a cancellation report under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) in that particular case.
