The hearing in a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was postponed on Saturday at a MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh due to a health camp organized by the Bar Council. The case will now be heard on October 1.
According to Vijay Mishra's lawyer, Santosh Kumar Pandey, the statement from his client was scheduled to be recorded on Saturday. However, the lawyers were occupied with the health camp held on the civil court premises, resulting in the delay of court proceedings.
"The court has postponed the matter to October 1," he said.
Rahul Gandhi is accused of making objectionable remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka elections, when Shah was serving as the BJP president. The complaint was filed by Mr. Mishra, a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, in August 2018, and the case has been ongoing in court since then.
On February 20, during the "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra," Mr. Gandhi surrendered before the court and was granted bail on personal surety bonds of ₹25,000 each. Following this, the court issued multiple notices for him to record his statement; however, he was unable to attend due to the Lok Sabha elections
Gandhi finally appeared before the MP-MLA court on July 26, where he recorded his statement, asserting that the case was filed to gain "cheap publicity." During the session with Special Judge Shubham Verma, he stated that he had never made remarks against anyone that would warrant a defamation case, as reported by his lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla.
The matter was scheduled for further proceedings on August 12; however, it was deferred due to the judge's leave.
On the next two dates on August 23 and September 5, the hearing did not take place as the plaintiff could not appear in the court due to ill health.
