Centre Notifies Transfer of Allahabad HC Judge Justice Shamim Ahmed to Madras HC

The Central government, on Friday, issued a notification confirming the transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed from the Allahabad High Court to the Madras High Court. This gazetted notification was made available on the Ministry of Law & Justice's website.

Earlier, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, had denied Justice Ahmed's request for reconsideration of his transfer on August 30.

On August 21, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed the transfer of Justice Shamim Ahmed "for better administration of justice." The proposal followed consultations with a Supreme Court judge familiar with the affairs of the Allahabad High Court. Additionally, the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court were consulted, as outlined in the resolution.

As the Collegium found no compelling reason to accept Justice Ahmed's request against the proposed transfer, it has reaffirmed its August 21 recommendation.

Justice Shamim Ahmed was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on December 12, 2019, and was later confirmed as a permanent judge on March 26, 2021. Prior to his elevation, he had a legal practice spanning from 1993, during which he handled cases related to civil, constitutional, service, labor, company, and criminal law.
