Calcutta HC Orders Second Post-Mortem in Alleged Gang-Rape and Murder Case of Schoolgirl

The Calcutta High Court directed on Sunday that a second post-mortem examination be performed on the schoolgirl who was reportedly gang-raped and murdered in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the 10-year-old girl was returning home to Joynagar after attending her tuition classes.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court, while hearing a petition submitted by the girl's parents, ordered that the second post-mortem be carried out at AIIMS Hospital in Kalyani on Monday, in the presence of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of the Baruipur court.

Justice Ghosh also instructed the police to file a case under the POCSO Act. If AIIMS Kalyani does not have the required facilities to conduct the post-mortem, it should be performed at Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital, which is also in Kalyani.

However, the court emphasized that the post-mortem must be carried out by doctors from AIIMS Kalyani, rather than those from the state-run hospital.

The body of the schoolgirl is currently held at the Kantapukur morgue, where the initial post-mortem was conducted. One individual has been arrested in connection with the murder.
