Today, the Bombay High Court granted medical bail to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal in a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Earlier, a single-judge bench led by Justice NJ Jamadar had granted Goyal interim medical bail to undergo cancer treatment, which was made permanent with Monday’s order.
Earlier, Goyal was granted interim medical bail for two months to undergo cancer treatment after medical reports confirmed he was suffering from malignant tumors. The bail was later extended for an additional month to facilitate a surgical procedure.
Initially, Goyal sought bail from the sessions court, where he was permitted to consult private doctors. The medical check-up revealed the severity of his condition, prompting Goyal to request medical bail.
In response, the special judge allowed Goyal to remain hospitalized for two months for treatment but rejected his request for permanent bail on medical grounds in April, though he was allowed to continue treatment in the hospital.
Goyal then filed a plea before the Bombay High Court, which on May 6 granted him two months of interim medical bail, subject to the condition that he remain within the jurisdiction of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mumbai. This bail was later extended by another four weeks as Goyal continued his treatment.
Today, the Bombay High Court made his medical bail permanent.
Senior Counsel Abad Ponda along with team of Naik Naik & Company comprising advocates Ameet Naik, Abhishek Kale and Harish Khedkar appeared for Goyal.
