Bombay HC Upholds Multilingual Signboards in Municipal Councils Beyond Marathi

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court remarked on Friday that municipal councils are free to display signboards in languages other than Marathi, alongside the official Marathi language of Maharashtra, without any constraints.

On April 10, the Nagpur Bench dismissed a petition seeking the removal of Urdu language signboards alongside Marathi on the signboards of Patur Municipal Council.

A division bench of Justice Avinash Gharote and Justice ML Jawalkar rejected this petition. The court said,

''There is no restriction on the use of any language other than the official language.''

Varsha Bagde filed a petition calling for urgent action, citing that according to the Maharashtra Local Authorities (Official Languages) Act, 2022, the presence of any language other than Marathi on signboards of civic authorities is prohibited.
