The Allahabad High Court has issued a directive to the Uttar Pradesh State Government, mandating compensation of Rs. 1 to be provided to lawyers of the high court involved in a clash with the police back in 2004.
The significant directive was issued following a plea filed by Dr. Ashok Nigam, a senior lawyer and Chairman of the Elders Committee at the high court. In his petition, Dr. Ashok Nigam sought compensation for the damages and injuries sustained by the lawyers during a confrontation with the police personnel on the court premises.
Initially, acknowledging the age of the matter, the bench, comprising Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Om Prakash Shukla inquired with the senior advocate about the compensation he was seeking.
The court duly acknowledged Senior Advocate Nigam's response, noting his magnanimity. Dr. Ashok Nigam expressed that he would accept any compensation amount determined by the high court, emphasizing that the dispute was primarily centered around the honor of the legal profession.
Therefore, recognizing the seniority, stature, and respect commanded by Senior Advocate Nigam, as a gesture of respect, the court ordered the State to provide a token compensation of Rs. 1 to the lawyers involved in the incident.
