9 new judges for Bombay High Court: SC Collegium recommends appointment

The Supreme Court Collegium on Tuesday proposed the appointment of nine advocates as judges of the Bombay High Court.

The recommended advocates are:

  • Rajesh Sudhakar Datar
  • Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh
  • Gautam Ashwin Ankhad
  • Mahendra Madhavrao Nerilkar
  • Nivedita Prakash Mehta
  • Prafulla Surendra Kumar Khubalkar
  • Ashwin Damodar Bhobe
  • Rohit Wasudeo Joshi
  • Advait Mahendra Sethna

These names were submitted to the Supreme Court Collegium by the High Court Collegium through two separate resolutions dated January 19 and April 19.

According to these resolutions, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, in consultation with the two senior-most colleagues, recommended the above advocates for judgeship.

After reviewing the relevant material and comments from the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court Collegium deemed all nine advocates suitable for elevation and made the recommendation accordingly.

The Bombay High Court currently operates with 66 judges, although its sanctioned strength is 94.
