Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is among the most tech-savvy judges of the country. He has been continuously saying that technology makes work easier and cannot turn away from it. CJI Chandrachud advocates the use of mobile for transparency in court work. However, once in the courtroom, he became a bit uncomfortable after seeing a person recording from a mobile.
Justice DY Chandrachud was hearing in court one day (before his elevation as Chief Justice of India). During this, his eyes fell on a person. He was recording the proceedings of the court with his mobile. According to a report in "The Week", Justice Chandrachud was perplexed as to how a person can record court proceedings? But after a few seconds their consumption changed.
As per the report Justice Chandrachud says that later my thinking changed. I thought what's the big deal in it. There is open court hearing and nothing is confidential here. So what's the harm in recording.
Recently, CJI Chandrachud (JI DY Chandrachud) shared an incident related to one of his junior colleagues. He told that his junior colleague was working on the iPad in a High Court, during which the administrative officer of the court came and asked to turn off the iPad citing rules. To this his colleague replied that I am following the rules.
Justice Chandrachud has started many new facilities in the Supreme Court after becoming the CJI. This includes facilities ranging from e-filing to virtual court e-payment and video conferencing. An open source software has also been developed for the information and management of cases during the Corona period, which has become very popular.
Recently, the facility of live transcription of cases through Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been started in the Supreme Court. The CJI had told that it has been started as an experiment and initially transcription of constitution bench cases is being done.
