Western Culture's Lure: Youth's lives spoiled with free relationships, says Allahabad High Court

Allahabad, [25th of July, 2023]: In a significant development, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to an accused, Jai Govind alias Ramji Yadav, who was booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a young girl. Justice Siddharth, while delivering the ruling, made noteworthy observations about the impact of Western culture on the youth of the country and its influence on their relationships.

The Court opined that the current generation, under the influence of social media, movies, TV serials, and web series, is finding it challenging to navigate their lives and relationships. Justice Siddharth expressed concern that the youth's fascination with "free relationships" with members of the opposite sex, as depicted in Western media, often leads them to the wrong path, leaving them disillusioned and unable to find a genuine soulmate.

The case before the Court involved a love affair between the accused and the victim. The deceased had reportedly been involved with multiple boys, which eventually led to her frustration and tragic decision to end her life. The Court noted that the victim's struggle to find a clear path between two relationships resulted in her consuming mosquito repellent and falling unconscious in a marketplace, where she later succumbed.

The Court further highlighted that due to the clash between Western norms and Indian culture, cases involving offenses such as rape on false promises of marriage, instigation to commit suicide, and other major and minor offenses arising from such relationships are increasingly coming before the courts.

The decision to grant bail to the accused was influenced by factors such as the uncertainty regarding the conclusion of the trial, the one-sided investigation by the police ignoring the accused's side, and the applicant's right to a speedy trial as guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

The ruling has sparked discussions about the impact of popular culture on the youth's decision-making processes and how Indian society grapples with the acceptance of Western norms. The Court's observations have prompted introspection on the role of media and the need for comprehensive guidance on relationship matters for the younger generation.
