Vijayabharathi Sayani steps into the role of Acting Chairperson at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Sayani assumed the role following the departure of retired Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra, who vacated the position of Chairperson on June 1. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs officially announced the new appointment on June 3.
"The President, under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, is pleased to authorise Smt Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, Member, National Human Rights Commission, to act as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, with effect from 02.06.2024, until the appointment of a new Chairperson in the NHRC to fill such vacancy,” the notification read.
Sayani has an extensive background in serving various professional and social organizations, such as the Anjani Matha Seva Trust, the Samvardhinee Nyas, and Pragna Bharati, all dedicated to the comprehensive empowerment of women. Her involvement spans across different capacities within these organizations.
Furthermore, she has conducted over 100 workshops aimed at educating female students in colleges about their rights and various social issues. Her efforts in this regard have earned her recognition and several awards from different organizations for her significant contributions to women's welfare.
