In a momentous joint session of Parliament marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar sparked significant discussion with his candid remarks on parliamentary conduct and the pivotal role of citizens in upholding constitutional principles.

Addressing both Houses, Dhankhar emphasized the urgent need for disciplined debate, adherence to fundamental duties, and placing the nation’s interests above all else.

Commencing his address, Dhankhar hailed the Constitution as the cornerstone of Indian democracy, acknowledging its key role in the country's post-independence success. However, he quickly shifted focus to current challenges, notably expressing concern over the growing disorder in parliamentary proceedings. He described these disruptions as a calculated attempt to undermine the very foundation of democratic institutions. “It is time to restore the sanctity of our democratic temples through constructive dialogue, debate, and meaningful discussions,” Dhankhar urged, calling on lawmakers to reflect on the values championed by the Constituent Assembly.

The Vice President also invoked Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution, to underscore the perils of internal divisions within a democracy. He warned that such discord poses a more significant threat than any external challenges, urging a renewed commitment to fundamental duties, which he described as essential for a vigilant and engaged citizenry. "Dr. Ambedkar’s caution rings true even today – internal conflict is a greater danger than any external threat," he said, encouraging citizens to embrace their role in safeguarding democratic values.

Dhankhar's message, directed at both lawmakers and the general public, emphasized the importance of placing the "nation first." He stressed that Members of Parliament bear a unique responsibility to elevate India’s voice globally, a task that demands unity and discipline. "All citizens, particularly MPs, must amplify our nation’s presence on the world stage. We must be more vigilant than ever," he concluded.

Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla welcomed the gathering, underscoring the importance of Constitution Day as a time for national reflection. He recalled the Modi government's 2015 decision to institutionalize the celebration and encouraged MPs to engage with their constituents in observance of the day.

President Droupadi Murmu is set to address the assembly, concluding a day dedicated to honoring India’s constitutional legacy.

As the nation observes Samvidhan Divas under the theme “Humara Samvidhan, Humara Swabhiman” (Our Constitution, Our Pride), Dhankhar's speech reaffirmed the Constitution’s central role in fortifying Indian democracy.
