The Uttarakhand High Court mandated the renaming of a disease currently named after the renowned tourist spot Ranikhet in Uttarakhand.
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal, has directed the state government to present an alternative name for 'Ranikhet disease' through an affidavit by June 27.
In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), Ranikhet resident Satish Joshi has highlighted the association between the scenic hill station and a viral disease known as 'Ranikhet disease', which primarily affects birds and chickens. During the court proceedings, the bench discussed the potential repercussions of the disease's name on tourism in Ranikhet, which is celebrated for its natural beauty and historical significance.
Situated approximately 50 km from Almora, Ranikhet Cantonment allures visitors with its invigorating climate, stunning vistas of the Himalayas, and serene, unpolluted greenery adorned with deodar and oak trees. The presence of the Kumaon Regiment Center adds to its historical significance. Moreover, the golf courses here offer unforgettable experiences, captivating even the most seasoned tourists.
The petitioner argued that just as other magnificent hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital are glorified, Ranikhet should not be affected by the negative impact of any disease.
The state government, in its response, acknowledged its limited jurisdiction in the matter but proposed that the central government may take necessary measures to change the name of the disease.
